Madonna of the Trail - Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania Route 40 National Road

July 19, 2017

Madonna of the trail monument is dedicated to the spirit of hard-working pioneer women in the United States.

It is one of 12  monuments (all the same) along the National Old Trails Highway. Each are intended to be a symbol of courage, strength, and love of the women who worked  to establish a home for their families.

"They (the women) were just as brave or braver than their men, because, in many cases, they went with a sad heart and trembling bodies. They went, however, and endured every hardship that befalls a pioneer." -Harry S. Truman

Thanks for visiting!

  1. I'm a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) who erected and maintain these statues. We have one in Missouri (in Lexington). They help us remember the incredible spirit and tenacity of these women. Thank you for sharing!!
